If you've never read Edna Ferber, you should. Some of her passages take my breath away with their skill, humor, and poignancy. She tends to have many strong female characters, which is not typical of the early part of the last century. But all of her characters are wonderfully well-developed and very human. I have read about six of her books, and this one is one of my favorites. This one is a series of short stories, so it's a good way to start reading Edna Ferber, especially if you are short on time in your day. She creates such a full and interesting world in each story. I am amazed by her ability to write so well and to create such believable and compelling stories in such a small number of words. If you like this book, read others of hers such as The Girls and Showboat. If you are from Chicago, you will especially appreciate her work because she writes a lot about it, and it's fun to read about what it used to be like. Her books will break your heart a little because they are gritty and unsentimental, but they are full of humor and humanity, too. A truly gifted writer!Product details

I am very familiar with the films of Edna Ferber, I feel in love first with Showboat and Giant. When I discovered they were written by the same author I knew I had to learn more about her. I found a book and then fell in love with So Big too- and discovered those movies. Cinnamrom I liked less. I hoped to get them on kindle, but alas they were not available. I knew nothing of this story collection and didn't really want to read it, but it didn't take long for me to get into the first story. After a while I found myself liking it, now I love it. I love the way she writes. Still looking forward to Giant and Showboat showing up one of these days for
I stopped reading 3three fourths of the way through because it the book was so boring I kept falling asleep.
